8 India Getaways I'd Book Again in 2026: Beaches, Hills, and Old Cities

From a Goa sunset to a misty Ooty morning, these are the escapes that actually earned a second trip. Real places, real stays, honest notes.

TL;DR: India's best breaks aren't all in one direction. Beaches in the west, hills down south, palaces up north, and if you've got a long weekend and an itch to leave the country, Bangkok is closer than you think. Prices and dates shift, so I check each one on Agoda before I commit.

00Why I keep coming back to these

I travel light and I travel often, mostly inside India, occasionally just over the border. Over the last couple of years the same handful of places kept pulling me back. Not because they're famous, but because the stay-plus-place combination just worked. Here they are, roughly in the order I'd rank them for a first-timer.

01Goa — the one everyone starts with

Goa is the default for a reason. You can do it barefoot and cheap in the north, or slow and quiet in the south, and both versions are good.

My advice: decide your Goa before you book. North for the cafes, markets and late nights. South for the empty sand and the naps. Rooms swing wildly by season here, so the same beach shack can double in price over New Year.

02Ooty — Kluney Manor

The hills do something the beach can't. Ooty in the morning, wrapped in mist with a cup of tea, is one of those small perfect things.

Kluney Manor leans into the old hill-station charm, that heritage wood-and-quilts feeling rather than a glass-box hotel. It costs a bit more than a bare room, and on a cold Ooty night you'll be glad it does.

03Munnar — Monkey Tribe

Munnar is Ooty's greener, quieter cousin: tea estates rolling out in every direction. Monkey Tribe is the backpacker-friendly pick, the kind of place where you meet people over breakfast and end up sharing a jeep to a viewpoint.

If you're young, solo, or just don't need much beyond a clean bunk and good company, this is the move.

04Udaipur — Grand Continent (and Young Monk for backpackers)

Udaipur earns the "most romantic city in India" line honestly. Lakes, palaces, rooftop dinners with the water glowing at sunset.

Two ways to do it. Grand Continent if you want a comfortable mid-range base with room to breathe. Young Monk Hostel if you're counting rupees and would rather spend them on a boat ride than a bigger room. I've done both and enjoyed both, for different trips.

05Jaipur — Hotel The Orion Express

The Pink City is loud, gorgeous and a little chaotic, exactly as it should be. You want a base that's easy to get in and out of after a long day of forts and bazaars, and Orion Express does that job without drama.

06Daman — VITS Daman Devka Beach

Daman flies under the radar, which is half its appeal. Devka Beach is an easy weekend from Mumbai or Gujarat, and a beachfront property here feels like a small find rather than a tourist queue.

• Best for: a quiet weekend beach escape, road-trippers from the west

07Hampi (stay in Hosapete) — Hotel Malligi

Hampi's boulder-and-ruins landscape doesn't look real. Most travellers base themselves in nearby Hosapete, and Hotel Malligi is the long-standing, dependable name there: pool, proper restaurant, a comfortable landing after a dusty day among the temples.

08Bangkok — De Prime Rangnam Hotel

Sometimes the getaway is a passport stamp. Bangkok is a short, cheap flight from much of India, and a few days of street food, malls and temples resets everything.

De Prime Rangnam sits handy for the BTS and the shopping, which is most of what a short Bangkok trip is about.

A few honest notes

When's the best time for the hill stations? Ooty and Munnar are loveliest in the cooler months, though that's also when they're busiest and priciest. Shoulder season gives you softer crowds and softer rates.

Beach or hills for a first big trip? If you've never done either, Goa is the gentler introduction. The hills reward a slightly slower traveller who doesn't mind a longer road up.

Is one weekend enough for Bangkok from India? Tight but doable with a Friday flight. Three nights feels far more human, so stretch it if you can.
