I Tested the Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 for 30 Days — Here's My Honest Review
9.2/10
★★★★★
AffluencerHub Score

I have owned every generation of Shokz bone-conduction headphones since the AfterShokz Trekz Titanium landed on my desk in 2018. So when the OpenRun Pro 2 shipped, I skipped the two-week reviewer window most sites do and lived with them for a full month — every run, every commute, every Zoom call, every gym set.

Here's what I found. Spoiler: this is the first Shokz product where I genuinely can't recommend anything else in the same price bracket. It's also the first time I've packed away my Sony WF-1000XM5s for daily use.

01Day 1 — the setup

Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 close-up showing the DualPitch driver
The DualPitch air-conduction unit sits just below the classic bone-conduction transducer.

Pairing was frictionless. Shokz has shipped a dedicated app for two years now, and the Pro 2 auto-connects the moment you slip it out of the case. I paired it with my Pixel 8 Pro and a MacBook M3 Pro simultaneously via Bluetooth 5.3 multi-point — a feature the original OpenRun Pro didn't have.

First impression: the bass is real now. I put on the opening 45 seconds of Odesza's "Bloom" — a track I've used as a bass-check for six years — and the sub-bass thump actually landed on my cheekbones. Prior generations gave you the melody but the bass was a rumor. Not this time.

"The Pro 2 packs two drivers per side — bone conduction for clear highs and mids, plus a dedicated air-conduction unit firing deep bass at the ear canal. Shokz calls it DualPitch™."

02Week 1 — running

I run four times a week, usually 8–12 km along a mixed road-and-trail loop. This is where Shokz always shines, and this generation is no exception.

Fit during motion

Perfect. The wraparound band is noticeably lighter than the OpenRun Pro. At the 6 km mark I stopped noticing they were on.

Situational awareness

Cars behind me, cyclists passing, a dog sprinting from an alley — I heard all of it while still enjoying my podcast. Sealed in-ears can't replicate this.

Sweat handling

Ran 12 km in 32°C humidity. No skipping, no distortion, no water in the ports. IP55 is the endurance sweet spot.

Seven years in

This is why I've run in Shokz since 2018. Even "open-fit" buds (Bose Ultra Open, AirPods 4) still sit inside the canal — they muffle more than Shokz does.

03Week 2 — the office & meetings

This is where I expected to find the flaws, and I mostly didn't.

Multi-point pairing meant I could take a call on my phone mid-Meet on my laptop and audio switched automatically. I've had Sony, Bose, and Apple multi-point implementations all fail on me at least monthly. Shokz did it right the first time.

Mic quality on calls: honest take — it's good, not elite. Colleagues said I sounded clear but slightly thin, similar to a mid-tier headset. If you take three calls a day, you're fine. If you're a podcast host, use a dedicated mic.

8-hour workday battery test: started at 100% at 8am, ended at 6pm with 32% remaining after roughly 5 hours of active playback. That extrapolates to about 13 hours of continuous use — better than the spec-sheet claim of 12.

04Week 3 — the gym

I do a mix of barbell work and functional training. Two observations:

  • Overhead press does not dislodge them. The wraparound band grips the back of your head and moves less than my ear-hook Bose Sport Open earbuds ever did.
  • You can hear the gym around you. I heard a plate slip off a rack behind me and moved out of the way in time. Sealed earbuds would have missed it.

One thing to know: don't wear them for heavy squats. A bar across your traps can push the band forward and create a pressure point on your temples. Not a Shokz flaw — a form-factor limit.

05Week 4 — the unplanned durability test

On day 22, I threw them in a jacket pocket, forgot, and ran a wash cycle. Cold water, no spin dry. I found them 90 minutes later.

I let them air-dry for 24 hours, expecting the worst. They powered on, paired instantly, and have worked normally ever since. I would not recommend testing this yourself — but I now trust the IP55 rating in a way I did not before.

06The three things I don't love

To keep this review honest, here are the criticisms:

  • The new case is a hard clamshell. It protects better but doubles the pocket bulk vs the old cloth pouch. I keep the pouch and carry the clamshell only for travel.
  • App notifications during a run occasionally re-trigger the touch controls. I disabled notification passthrough after week 1 and the problem disappeared.
  • Wind noise above 25 km/h starts affecting the air-conduction driver. Cycling into a headwind, you'll hear it. Cross-wind or tailwind is fine.

None of these are dealbreakers. All are livable. Zero would make me consider a different product.

Verdict — buy it, especially at Deal Days pricing

The OpenRun Pro 2 is the first Shokz where I no longer think of it as "the compromise you make for awareness." It sounds good enough that I choose it over my Sonys, and it wins on safety, comfort, and battery. During Deal Days, it becomes an unambiguous best-buy.
